Contrary to popular belief, Florence and I did not meet through YuhGlo Camp. As a matter of fact, we did not speak to each other during the camp aside from casual greetings. During December 2015, we officially spoke during a collaborative youth event which we partnered to work together on. While on a trip to Atlanta, a colleague mentioned to me “Hey Sam have you looked at Florence? She’s a good girl”. In fact, I sharply rebuked her for even considering that thought because I was not looking, especially not someone I work with in ministry.
Well, later on that following year, February to be exact, a thought came into my head to call Florence while sitting in my college dorm. Initially I did not pay it any attention but eventually, I did. She picked up the phone and told me she had a meeting with her friends but she could give me a call back if I wouldn’t mind. I agreed, and about 2 hours later she called me. We spoke to each other for a while that evening. We spent most of the evening conversing, laughing and sharing our life’s encounter with one another. From that moment forward, Florence became a trusted friend, and confidante.
Her wisdom was very evident and her friendship was genuine. After months of platonic friendship, our passion for God, love for people, deep respect and appreciation for one another made it a no-brainer to embark on a relationship that can lead towards marriage.
The thought was scary because I had ended a relationship previously and Florence was very difficult to figure out. God, however, had a different plan, two people who had no intentions of a relationship had now begun to fall for each other. So I took the bold step of inviting her into a courting relationship after speaking with her pastor and mother and the rest has ended us here so I believe we did something right and God has been merciful!
